Good To Great!
Jim Collins known for his best selling book Built To Last has written another book called Good To Great. This is how he begins his book...
Good is the enemy of great.
And that is one of the key reasons why we have so little that becomes great.
We don't have great schools, principally because we have good schools. We don't have great government, principally because we have good government. I would add - we do not have many great churches, principally because we have good churches. Few people attain great lives, in large part because it is just so easy to settle for a good life. The vast majority of companies never become great, precisely because the vast majority become quite good - and that is their main problem.
Jim Collins
Jesus had a way of calling people to a higher level. He challenged his apostles to leave the fishing boats to become fisher's of men. He called Zacchaeus, a man out on a limb, to come down and discover salvation. Jesus also had a way of turning away those who wanted to follow, but they had somehow forgotten to consider the cost. Foxes had holes, birds of the air had their nests, however Jesus had no where to lay his head.
The last several years we at University have tried to become a healthy church. A place that we can call home is more than a slogan. In many ways we have achieved many goals. We have become a good church. I wonder if that can become a problem. Are we ready for a higher calling? Are we ready to consider the cost? Are we ready to move from good to great for the glory of God and the cause of Christ?
