The Fine Art Of Fence Building

A couple of weeks ago my brother and I had to go to our farm and repair some fence. Apparently some thieves decided to drive through the fence instead of lifting the stolen goods over the fence. This decision created a mess. Have you ever pondered the importance of fences? They keep some things in and it also keeps, or is supposed to, the wrong things out. Now the cows were free! Have you ever noticed that all cows believe that grass tastes better on the other side of the fence? Did you know some people believe what is on your property is better than what they have? We need a fence!

The only problem is that neither Jack nor I had a clue on how to build or repair one. You see I come from a long line of Hodge's who would rather do the job themselves than spend the time to teach some kid to do it. Pops never let Dad do too much so Dad in turn never let us. I am continuing this dysfunction by not allowing my kids to do anything either. It is a wonderful family tradition. However, fence building skills would have come in handy this day.

I was worried when I saw three chain saws in the back of Jack's truck. Next to the saws was the barbed wire. Then I saw what Dad lovingly called the "magic machine." It attached to the wire so you could stretch it tight. (However, do not stretch the new wire too tight!) I don't have time to tell you why - just believe me. Miraculously in a few short hours the job was complete and no one was seriously hurt. Pops would not have been too proud of our fence, but it does the job.

Fences are so important in life. They keep you safe and protect you from the outside. Some call them boundaries. The sad truth is that we are not very good in setting boundaries. We would do well if we learned the fine art of fence building. We would be wise parents if we helped our children learn about boundaries.
